Junior Cricket Grade Format

Hutt District Junior Cricket provides cricket for children at primary and intermediate school, up to the end of Year 8. Grades are based on their school year at the start of the cricket season.

​Also the club offers for years 6, 7 & 8 players the opportunity to participate in club trails to represent the club in Cricket Wellington rep competitions in January and February.

Junior cricket grades are organised to match the school year of the children starting each season

Matches are played on a Saturday morning at 8:30 across the Hutt Valley. (Some games can be played on Sunday morning due to availability of grounds.

Have a Go - years 0 to 1

Who : Age 5-6, School Year 0/1

A fun introduction to cricket, learning the basics of batting, bowling, and fielding, by playing games as an aid to improving their skills. The emphasis will be on having a great time with friends.

This will be run on Friday evenings @ 5 pm at the Hutt Rec outside the club rooms.

Soft ball - years 2 to 3 Dual Pitch

Who : Age 6-8, School Year 2/3

This grade is generally played on a Saturday morning. The games are played on dual pitches, meaning all players are involved for the whole game. Games last about an hour and are scheduled to minimise travel. Teams generally comprise a minimum of 8 players. Games are played with a soft ball.

Every effort is made for the players to be in a team where they have a number of their friends.

Softball - year 4

Who : Age 8-9, School Year 4

Year 4 Softball is a 20 over game. Similar to "normal", cricket but played with a "soft" ball

Teams have 8 players and play against other cricket clubs around the Hutt Valley each Saturday morning between 8.30am and 10.30am, in the Year 4 competition. All gear playing gear is provided by the club. No safety gear required. Every effort is made for the players to be in a team where they have a number of their friends.

In an effort to speed up the games all teams bowl all their overs from one end.

Girls Soft Ball Cricket

Who : Age 9-13, School Year 5 through to Year 8

Cricket Wellington will be offering a “Girls only soft ball competition” on Sundays at 1pm. The games take approximately 1.5 hours to complete and there will be up to six games throughout the season.

All year 5 – 8 girls are eligible to play and we are keen to enter a team into the competition. If you know others that may be interested to give cricket a go please encourage them to register. Players can play both Saturday and Sunday cricket with one registration only.

Hard ball - years 5 to 8

Who : Age 9-13, School Year 5 through to Year 8

Year 5 is the start of the hardball journey which continues onto Year 8. Playing formats and pitch lengths increase as you get older. Details of each grade can be viewed below.

Games are played with the smaller 142g cricket ball. Protective gear is worn by batsmen and wicket keepers. Helmets are complusory. Many players choose to use their own equipment, but the club also provides each team with gear. The games are generally played on Saturday mornings but Sunday games are possible if there are ground restrictions
